Mother-of-pearl, also known as nacre, is not just an iridescent substance whose optical characteristics impress the observer and which is often used for jewellery. It is also an excellent material for working with. Nacre consists of 97 percent lime, but has a thousand times higher breaking strength. The reason has to do with the layer composition of mother of pearl.

The basic materials used are first quality chestnut or alder and mother-of-pearl collected especially from the Red Sea, reminiscent of big and colored mussels.
First the desian is chosen and after one year of resting the dried chestnut is rendered into its primitive shape by carpentersusing various tools. The wooden body is now ready for inlaying.
.

The first stage of inlaying with mother-of-pearl is drawing, where the master draws the pattern which is to be inlaid with mother-of-pearl with inspiration from ancient geometrical forms such as tulips and other flowers using a special pen made for this purpose.
Afterwards, the pattern drawn is marked by sharpened steel chisels using hammers. The aluminium, brass or nickel strings are placed in the marked places with extreme care and diligence. The desing to be engraved and inlaid with mother of pearl is ready now. The parts marked as explained above and where the mother-of-pearl will be ilaid are carved again using machine-wheels to fit these carved spaces are embedded with a paste prepared from the powder obtained from chesnut wood and glue. The work is left to rest for one day to let paste dry.
The piece is than sanded and coloring stage starts. Nitric acid and similar acids are applied on the piece of work, which is then left to rest one more day. After the acid is absorbed and the product gains color, olive oil is applied. The chestnut wood, which absorbs the olive oil is considered to have gained color. Them comers the final stage of varnishing. A special natural varnish prepared with the shells of the gum-lac tree and alcohol ensures a perfectly smooth surface.
The magnificent work of art becomes ready for use after adding accessories such as chains, velvet and clips.
